Headshot About

Why We Built Shelter

Shelter exists to help families navigate the most difficult moment in life. Losing a loved one is often traumatic, and that’s before you have to take care of all of the paperwork, the legal issues, and the stuff.

Proper estate planning means having a will that outlines what should happen to your assets. It means having an advanced directive so your family understands your wishes. And it means providing transparency to your loved ones so they can access everything they need.

No one wants to leave their family a mess to deal with. Your loved ones’ memories of you shouldn’t include scrambling to find passwords, accounts, phone pin codes, or email logins.

Shelter gives your loved ones access to everything they need, organized thoughtfully by you. It’s the tool every person who’s lost a loved one wishes they had.

It’s the platform your loved ones will be thankful you gave to them.

The empty book

After Jason’s parents passed, he found a book while cleaning out their house. Everything You Need to Know When I’m Gone – 100 pages of questions meant to guide him through everything they’d left behind.

But they never filled it out.

They bought it, which is worth something. But a book with 100 unanswered questions isn’t a guide. It’s a reminder of what could have been, if they’d had an easier way.

What are people supposed to do?

  • Put their entire life into a paperback book, filled out once and then never updated?
  • Create endless spreadsheets of rows and columns for everything?
  • Store a desk drawer’s worth of things in a safe and hope your loved ones know how to access it?

There isn’t a streamlined solution. That’s why we built Shelter.

A safe space for your family's essential information so they're never alone.

Life is complicated enough when things are going well.

When your family deals with the hard times – the death of a parent or spouse – it gets way more difficult. It’s not just the will or last wishes. It’s bank accounts. Selling a car or home. Canceling a Netflix subscription.

Try putting together the pieces of someone’s life after they’re gone, and you realize how much was scattered, how much was unfindable, how much time was lost at the worst possible moment.

Shelter makes storing and sharing your accounts and assets easy, and gives you control over who can access them and when.
